Cleveland Browns closer to sign rookie QB Brandon Weeden, other first-round draft picks – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns are learnt to be closer to sign their first-round picks of this year’s draft as the team is set to hit training camp later this month and under the professional league regulator, National Football League (NFL), rules, all rookies have
to be under contract before the camp opens.
As per the rules, all players without any contractual binding cannot participate in any training activity, and keeping this fact in their view, Browns managers are said to be hammering out respective deals for their two draft players, who were selected in
the first round.
Brandon Weeden, the rookie QB, and running back, Trent Richardson, are the two first-round players expected to be signed in the near future.
Browns have about a couple of weeks left before the training camp begins and the matter of the deals is likely to be solved well before then.
Also, at the moment there is no need to press the panic button for either the team or players' agents, given almost all teams are in a similar situation as far as signing of their first-round draft players are concerned.
The Indianapolis Colts, for example, are yet to lock in this year’s top draft pick, QB Andrew Luck, while Ryan Tannehill is yet to get contract from the Miami Dolphins.
Some commentators are hopeful about clearing of pertaining contracts problems of almost all first-round rookies next week as maximum. A media report recently claimed Colts being closer to landing a contract to Luck, which should set the tone of first-round
draft selections signing campaign.
Meanwhile, Weeden has said he is not worried about the delay in his signing, adding his agent has been taking care of the matter on his behalf. He himself remains focused on the job before hand and that is to compete with the incumbent QB, Colt McCoy, for
the starting role.
Both players have been given a few brief opportunities to take snaps on the starting line, but none of them has emerged to be in the lead at the moment. The final showdown is due at the training camp now, where both QBs are expected to be neck-to-neck in
the competition for the starting QB position.
