Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur backs QB Brandon Weeden – NFL News
Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden is aware he faces a tougher challenge in second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers and according to the rookie he has done some self-talking in front of mirror as part of preparations.
Weeden, who has been preferred for the team’s offence leadership role over the incumbent Colt McCoy, had a rather shaky start to pro career in the preseason opener last week.
Brandon said:
"I can't say I've done it in front of a mirror, but I did talk to myself in my hotel room last week.”
He added:
"Numbers are deceiving. I'm excited to get back out there and correct the mistakes I made last week."
Coach Pat Shurmur on the other hand is optimistic about a strong comeback by the rookie. It is due to confidence of the coach that the rookie has won the leading role straightaway and, as claimed by McCoy, without a competition.
Pat said of Brandon’s potential to perform better in the upcoming game:
"He's a very resilient guy. So when he has a bad play or two, or a bad series or two, I see him bounce back extremely well.”
The signs of pressure for a better performance are clearly visible on the player given the stakes are higher for him. The coach is even more under pressure because he seems to be the only or major contributor to the decision of placing the rookie on starting
line. In spite of his confidence, the official probably realises that the QB faces intense pressure of expectations.
Packers are former Super Bowl champions and stand out among the strongest units in the league. A victory in the tie may not be essential for Browns but performances from players like the rookie QB will be crucial to determine their preparedness for the 2012
season.
Shurmur has backed Weeden for doing maximum possible workout before the game. The official said:
"You like to see completions. You like to see if the ball is thrown down field, again you get completions. You obviously want to score points, but you want to see the quarterback manage scoring drives and do it efficiently."
It is expected that Weeden is going to get more playing time in the upcoming game.
