Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur backs QB Brandon Weeden rectify mistakes – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ coach Pat Shurmur has backed workout by rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden to improve catching, grip and holding the ball with his famous and probably the only piece of advice: ‘hold’ on to the ball.
Brandon was helpless in his last preseason game as far as grip on the ball is concerned. He fumbled three times and looked missing power and tightness on the ball.
The QB said he is working on the issue, apparently without any help from the coaching staff. Some commentators have expressed their frustration over continued lack of attention and help from coaches to the rookie to work out the lapses, which more or less
every rookie faces in his first pro career.
Coach Shurmur was asked by reporters if he had anything more to help the rookie overcome his problems, he said:
"Yeah. Hang on to the ball. I think ball security is primary for anybody who touches the ball, especially the quarterback who touches it every play. He knows that we drill that. A great deal of fumbles in this league involves the quarterback in the pocket
and he knows that. It's very important for him to manoeuvre in the pocket where he doesn't fumble and if he's getting tackled or sacked he needs to wrap the ball up. He knows that."
Strangely, the coach seemed to be interested to lecture media on the general philosophy of hanging on to the ball, and no tips or measures for the rookie to tighten his grip on the ball were given.
The coach’s answer has baffled commentators and they apparently do not have answer why the rookie is left on his own during very initial phase of his career.
A number of them see the negligence of training and grooming need of QBs by Browns' coaches as probably one of the reasons that the team's offence leaders have never been able to develop beyond their natural potential.
The incumbent Colt McCoy seems to be the recent example of stagnation of talent, lack of creativity and grooming. The team must garnish its quarterbacks’ potential and talent to help them move beyond the level they could themselves work out as far as development
of their skills is concerned.
It is to be seen if the latest theoretical explaining of hanging on to the ball has any message for Brandon and he is able to rectify his mistakes.
