Cleveland Browns’ coach Pat Shurmur confident of QB Colt McCoy as team aims draft hiring – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ coach, Pat Shurmur, has backed quarterback, Colt McCoy, to utilise the offseason in getting as good as he can and join the squad as an improved player in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) regular season.
Shurmur, a one-year head coach, who trained McCoy throughout the last season, said that the player works well ‘at things’ and that the quality is going to help his development as a QB in the longer run.
He said:
"We're looking forward him to improving through the offseason."
The coach added:
"I think it will make a big difference in Year 2 (of) me being here. I told him to prepare himself to get as much out of this offseason as possible. I'm expecting him to attack this offseason and get as good as he can get within our system. He really works
at things, and that's going to help him."
McCoy was taken on board by Browns as a third-round draft pick in 2010 and his first two years have proved to be a showcase of rather dismal form.
His last season was marked with injuries and absences from the team. At the moment, he is nursing his head injury, which he suffered in the regular season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, into week 14 of the league.
Shurmur’s optimism about McCoy coincides with Browns’ plans of hiring a new draft pick this season, who, most likely, is going to be Baylor College’s quarterback, Robert Griffin III.
The coach is in Indianapolis attending NFL Scouting Combine and during his stay will have a 15-minute opportunity to interview the draft prize.
Shurmur said:
"First of all, I've never met the man. That's why this combine is going to be so important for me. He's obviously very accomplished as a college quarterback."
It is not clear yet if the new quarterback will be given a starting role by Browns or left behind Colt McCoy, provided he returns from the injury to join the team in the preseason or during the regular season.
Another potential suitor waiting for Griffin is the Indianapolis Colts, who have to choose either him or other star quarterback, Andrew Luck, from the Stanford College. Colts’ owner has already hinted at facing difficulty in making a choice in this matter.
Browns’ head coach has not talked about possibility of Griffin joining the Colts. Luck could then be an option for Browns, but the coach has not spoken about meeting luck at the combine.
Browns finished the 2011 NFL season with the poor record of four wins and 12 losses. Their performance is almost identical to the 4-9 success ratio of starts made by their QB, McCoy.
