Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur confident of prospects under new owner – NFL News
Cleveland Browns second-year coach Pat Shurmur during a recent media conference call made his best to express irrelevance albeit through a physical expression about change of the ownership of the team, portraying himself as focused on the job on hand as
ever before and boasting the first year as a period of great learning and maturing for him as a coach, but he knows there is no guarantee for him to stay for another year in the same capacity at the Browns.
While he was addressing journalists after coming out of the 17-16 loss in a closely fought game versus the Philadelphia Eagles, his new boss Jimmy Haslam III, who has bought the Browns on a billion dollars deal, was sitting behind him in the room, listening
to the official keenly but patiently.
Jimmy, who is a truck-stop magnate, a former minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a diehard Steeler himself, did not ask any question to Shurmur but the coach was probably aware of his presence, and played as sober and serious in front of media
as he could.
He, while probably finding himself in a position of giving an audition before the new owner, uttered a few words in praise of the new boss. He said:
"I really like Jimmy, and I've enjoyed getting to know him and I know Jimmy wants to win."
Pat has been credited to putting some energy and vigour in the Browns, but the team has been unfortunate not to record better results for about half a decade, ending each season with four or five wins.
The coach is confident of the team’s chances, and said to be even more confident about what he has been doing to serve the team’s coaching needs.
He said:
"I don't think it's important for us to just tell the world about where we are at. That's just my feelings on that. Maybe that's just me in Year 2."
Irrespective of the question about his prospects with the Browns, the coach has an important job this weekend and that is to successfully overpower the Cincinnati Bengals, who are gearing up for a strong rebound on the humiliating loss at the Baltimore Ravens’
hands in the season opener past Sunday.
