Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur not to replace Brandon Weeden with Colt McCoy – NFL News
Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur has ruled out the possibility of succumbing to the fans’ demand of bringing back quarterback Colt McCoy on the starting line and insisted Brandon Weeden will bounce back strongly in future in spite of the initial failing.
Brandon was all over the place in the first game of the season, struggling to find form and rhythm, and some of commentators do not see how he is going to overcome the problems without help from any coach.
According to the coach:
"He's got to look at this game and make the corrections. I told the team this: `What happened yesterday is correctable.' That's the great news. We're not looking at plays and situations that they can't improve on so that's where he's at right now."
After failing to make an impact in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, some of diehard fans have demanded to replace him with Colt McCoy, but the coach persists there is no need for it yet.
Pat’s persistence with Brandon reminds the football circles of former Jacksonville Jaguars’ coach Del Rio who had persisted with the then rookie failure Blaine Gabbert last year. At the end, it cost him his job and the franchise was sold. In Browns case
they have already been sold, while it is too early to predict the coach having any difficulty with the new owner.
The official had another option in form of Seneca Wallace but the player was released just before the start of the season. This leaves McCoy as a backup for Brandon. Colt was given an opportunity in the preseason game and he could not avail it.
Also, since the team tried him out as a starter for consecutive 13 games last season it less likely to make a sense to give him another season as an opportunity to improve.
Instead if the team is able to provide the much-needed help to rookie Weeden to work out his mistakes, which are not of a serious nature and almost all rookies face in the first season, he can bring victories to the franchise.
