Cleveland Browns content with receiver situation, avoid question of lacking strength-NFL News
The Cleveland Browns managed well so far to have successfully avoided the question around the lacking receivers strength, a need which the team should have looked more seriously given they have brought in one of the top three draft quarterbacks, Brandon
Weeden, off the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, held from April 26 to 28.
Browns have signed rookie receiver, Travis Benjamin, off this year’s draft and a number of commentators have argued that the team has not done enough to facilitate Weeden.
Yet the managers have avoided addressing the matter, which has turned into a controversy now.
Nothing is said by any of the team officials in response to the sparkling speculations that Browns’ signing of one receiver was not enough.
Instead, coach, Pat Shurmur, said they will be allowing the new receiver to start straightaway. Benjamin was taken in the fourth-round of the draft, and as now said by the coach, he will be in the mix for starting position.
Shurmur said:
"I would say so. I saw a lot of good stuff from Travis this weekend and I feel like he'll only continue to get better."
Benjamin is coming out of Miami. His performance in the college league consists of 41 passes for 609 yards in total. He also has three touchdowns to his record.
Back to the point of lacking receivers’ strength, one thing that Browns are not sure yet is if they will allow Weeden to be into the starting role, straightaway.
Browns are at the moment wary of that choice. According to one of the coach’s recent comments, they will rather prefer Weeden fight for the starting role along with Colt McCoy, who has the position, currently.
So while Weeden’s starting role is not guaranteed, the issue of hiring more receivers to facilitate him remains irrelevant.
Yet the argument is valid at its face that Browns lack the required number of receivers irrespective to the question who will be the starting quarterback.
Despite signing only one receiver, the management remains content with their receivers’ situation. Amid this scenario, only the performance of the players at the position is going to determine the importance of the question.
