Cleveland Browns cut DB Dimitri Patterson after Washington Redskins loss – NFL News
It is still a question if the Cleveland Browns have launched a full-fledged team rebuilding exercise under reign of new chief executive officer (CEO) Joe Banner but as an early indication of it they announced to have parted ways with defensive back Dimitri
Patterson.
The waiver has come as rather a surprise for commentators given the player signed a $16 million deal with the team only this offseason and had been performing rather well in the overall performance context of the Browns.
Without giving much explanation to the move the management said they have placed Patterson on the waivers, free to join another team as a free agent.
Patterson arrived in Cleveland off the Philadelphia Eagles' waivers in 2011 and appeared in seven games this season after signing the fresh deal that included $6 million guaranteed to him. It was a three-year contract.
He started four out of seven games he played for the Browns this season. His overall record consists of 28 tackles. He also broke up five passes.
His record with the Eagles included 50 tackles, a sack and four interceptions.
He has become first significant player to be released by the Browns under new owner Jimmy Haslam, who has tasked the new CEO to take care of the rebuilding drive.
With two more games to go in the regular season, the Browns’ situation on the points table is 5-9, at the bottom of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Until last week, they had an outright chance to progress to the playoffs through the
second wildcard opportunity, but the 38-21 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday (Dec. 16) ended their hopes.
They have to play with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers to close the season. Given both are tough opponents, winning against them will be a daunting task for them.
It is pertinent to note that the Browns have beaten the Steelers in an earlier game in the season and can possibly pull off another thriller. They however will be aware that the Steelers then were without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and if they are led
by him this time, a win will be a remote possibility.
