Cleveland Browns detail out strategy to evaluate, hire draft players this season-NFL News
The Cleveland Browns have straightened up their draft recruitment plan, under which the management is aiming for a phase-wise strategy to evaluate and sort out potential players for signing to the squad this draft season.
As a first step, the team has shortlisted a number of players to hold meetings with and thereby sort out those who have the potential to be taken on board.
Next step will be to host those selected players for exclusive workout to facilitate the final decision making of the team.
One of the potential players that Browns are aiming to evaluate and hire is Ryan Tannehill. He is leading the potential players who the team aims to invite for the workout.
Some of the players, who are expected to meet the management in the first phase, are running back, David Wilson, cornerback, Morris Claiborne, quarterbacks, Kirk Cousins and Brandon Weeden and wide receiver, Justin Blackmon.
Browns had earlier been in talks with St. Louis Rams for trade of no. 2 draft pick, but unfortunately lost the opportunity to the Washington Redskins.
Browns’ general manager, Tom Heckert, who was attending the NFL owners meeting in the past week, told a local newspaper that the management had as many as five players in mind who will be involved in discussions around the prospective hiring.
He said:
"But it's still early. We might fall in love with one of those guys when we have everyone in and say, 'Hey, we've got to have this guy, just forget it. We're going to stay there and take him,' which could happen."
A number of commentators are weighing Tannehill having great prospects for joining Browns next season. The managers, who are said to be not clearer in their commitment towards the draft, might find his signing even harder in the presence of QB, Colt McCoy.
Tannehill has impressed the teams and critics at his pro day and it is not clear if he is going to get the starting role in front of McCoy, who has already been backed for a comeback next season.
It will also depend on Tannehill if he will be willing to play as a backup for McCoy. There are greater chances that the team might try him on the starting line given that McCoy had not been impressive in the role last year.
Browns are among a few teams around the league that lack depth at certain positions in the squad and now are looking to bring in new players to fill the gaps.
It remains to be seen how successful they are going to be in their efforts of tapping right players from the draft market.
