Cleveland Browns land Brandon Weeden starting QB job after mock competition – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns have named rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden as their next offence leader after the brief competition between him and the incumbent Colt McCoy for the job, which as reflective in the development of the entire situation was a mere mock
exercise.
Interestingly, Browns’ selection of the leader has come only a week to start of training camp and without the rookie’s participation in any preseason or regular season game.
A majority of commentators agree that the announcement is not a surprise for them as Brandon’s selection as the starter was more or less an open secret all along the so-called competition. They believe the fight was just a dummy exercise as the team had
already been determined to place Weeden on the starting line straightaway.
Coach Pat Shurmur while confirming the rookie as the new starter claimed the decision came as a result of consultation with all three quarterbacks. They were told the team has handled the matter professionally, the official said.
Pat said:
“Brandon is the starter and we're moving forward. We're rolling and I'm not looking back."
He added:
"I sat down with all three guys separately and told them. Colt was very professional. Disappointed, but he handled it well."
A few minutes to confirmation of the starting role, Weeden boasted his performance at training camp. He sounded if he has won the job after a tough competition, in contradiction with the general view that there was no competition at all. The rookie said:
"I busted my tail for 10 practices now and put in a lot of work. I've had my ups and downs. We play Friday. My job is to get the team playing better and win games starting Friday."
It nevertheless confirms him as the new leader of the Browns’ offence, and marks the beginning of a real challenge for him. Since the rookie has not spent much time in training camp, it is difficult to evaluate his potential to perform this season.
One of the disadvantages the rookie has at the moment is that he is yet to expose himself to the real challenge. So it is too early for him to boast about prospects of the pro career success and for the team to have too higher expectations out of his first
year appearance.
