Cleveland Browns mull to place QB Colt McCoy as backup to rookie Brandon Weeden-NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ quarterback, Colt McCoy, has apparently shown willingness to play as a backup to rookie QB, Brandon Weeden, as despite his potential relegation from the number one spot, he showed up for the offseason voluntary workout.
Nonetheless, the sword of uncertainty hangs on his career with Browns.
In spite of recent assurances from Browns’ general manager, Tom Heckert, of not trading him, some of the game analysts do not buy the GM’s claim.
Soon after selecting Weeden in the 2012 draft, the GM said they would be weighing the QB's trade, surprisingly denying saying so the next day.
A decision against removal of the player seems to have come in view of an understanding between the stakeholders regarding the placement of the QB at No. 2 position.
Browns’ president, Mike Holmgren, said last weekend that McCoy could be placed as a backup to the new QB in the long run. This may be the only option to prevent the player’s departure from Cleveland.
Holmgren said:
"That could be a difficult situation except if it is ever going to work, it will work if that happens, because Colt McCoy is a special young man. Of course he wants to play, they all want to play. Again, nothing has been done yet we don't know how it is
going to sort itself out.”
He added:
"But, if that were to be the case, at some point, I think we have the best chance of making that work because of who the people are, who the players are. It is never easy, everyone wants to play. But, you only have one ball and only one guy can play at a
time."
In any case, the return of the player is good news given he had been fighting off the concussion problem for the better part of the postseason.
He suffered a head injury in the 13th game of the season against Pittsburgh Steelers, and since then, he has been in a phase of recovery and rehab.
