Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren speaks high of young players’ potential - NFL News
Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren has ruled out that innocent look – a reflection of Browns young side – can be detrimental to their victory chances this season, saying the team has depth and higher players' fitness and form level, well capable of
beating any side in the league.
He was reacting to calculative reservations observed by some commentators given the Browns have too many young players in the squad who lack experience and are unfamiliar with roughness and toughness of the pro conditions.
Mike said:
"This football team, even though it's young, is physically much better. We are young, but we have better players and we have better depth. I believe our special team's has a chance to be much better. If you're going to build it the way we're going to build
it, there's a chance you have these types of numbers."
From quarterback Brandon Weeden, running back Trent Richardson to wide receiver Josh Gordon, the Browns have selected as many as 15 prospective pro players out of this season’s draft and there is a sense of disbelief if the Browns will be able to attain
success with so many players without any professional experience.
The Browns do not agree, and as the president hopes they think the power, ambition, willingness and fitness the young players bring with them can make up for the lack of experience. This is well reflective in the team’s decision of naming Weeden as their
offence leader straightaway, and even without a competition, as claimed by the incumbent QB Colt McCoy.
Most importantly, Weeden has shown some promise during his appearance on the starting line in the preseason and if he is able to work on some of his mistakes, which are expected from a rookie player, he can prove his and Browns’ critics wrong.
Holmgren thinks:
"I'm not a numbers buff as far as NFL history, but this has got to be close to a record. There's a lot of rookies but there's good ones, really good players."
Coach Pat Shurmur is equally hopeful of young players’ performance potential. At the end it seems the Browns have already tried out too many players and given the size of a team like the Browns have the rookies are an obvious and foremost choice for them.
