Cleveland Browns re-sign D’Qwell Jackson and Seneca Wallace
The Cleveland Browns have reportedly re-signed starting linebacker D’Qwell Jackson and backup quarterback Seneca Wallace on Thursday.
A spokesman for the team says that they will not make any official announcements as of Thursday night. A local newspaper reported that Jackson has been signed for a one-year deal worth a maximum of $4.5 million. It also said that Tom Heckert, general manager
for the Browns, said that Jackson’s size will make him a perfect fit as the team changes from a 3-4 to 4-3 defensive scheme.
His contract is full of incentives that have to do with playing time and production, since his durability is an issue. He missed most of the past two seasons because of torn chest muscles that required surgery. He led the National Football League with 188
tackles in the 2008 season and announced his return to the team via Twitter.
“I'm backk!!” Jackson wrote on his Twitter page. “It's been a long time browns fans. Thanks to everyone I can assure you I won't let you down!!”
The newspaper also reported that Wallace has signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed sum of money. He has been a backup quarterback for his entire career and has started four games last season after starter Jack Delhomme injured his ankle in the first
game of the season. He won only one of those four games and was sidelined on 10 October, 2010 after suffering an ankle injury similar to Delhomme’s.
Wallace said recently that he wanted to be a starter for the Browns but after the team made it clear that Colt McCoy would most likely start at quarterback. Many presumed that the former Seattle Seahawk backup quarterback would take his talents elsewhere.
However, the Browns have no plans on letting him go since he already knows the West Coast offence that new head coach Pat Shurmur wants to instate.
Jackson debuted for the Browns in 2006, starting in all 13 of the 13 games he played in and racked up 93 tackles in his rookie season. His best year came in 2008 when he started in all 16 games of the season and recorded 154 tackles and two sacks. He also
deflected six passes and had three interceptions that he returned for a total of 29 yards. He did not play at all in the 2010 season.
Wallace debuted for the Seahawks in 2003 but did not play until 2005. He was acquired by the Browns in 2010 and played in eight games, four of which he started. He completed 64 passes, out of the 101 that he attempted, for a completing percentage of 63.4
and 694 passing yards. He averaged 6.9 yards per attempt and threw for four touchdowns, two interceptions and was sacked six times for a total loss of 33 yards.
