Cleveland Browns’ receiver Josh Cribbs dislocates four toes
Josh Cribbs, the Cleveland Browns star kick-returner and wide receiver, dislocated four toes on his right foot in a 26-20 overtime loss to the New York Jets on Sunday. The only surviving toe was his big toe, but Cribbs still expects to play next Sunday against
the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I just couldn't get back out there,” said Cribbs. “I was about to jump and somebody behind me stepped on my foot right as I was about to jump. They took X-rays and they just told me, 'You're done for the day.' I asked them what the X-rays show, but they
didn't tell me. They just said, 'You're done, you're done.'”
On the play, Cribbs made an impressive 39-yard reception, at the end of which he flipped over a Jets defender and landed on his back. His absence from the game restricted some of the things the Browns’ offence has had recent success with, specifically when
using the Wildcat offence.
“He's a playmaker for us, so just being able to hang in there and fight, to believe in each other, I thought that was huge for us,” said Colt McCoy, the Browns rookie quarterback.
Cribbs has 17 receptions for 235 yards with one touchdown, and 69 rushing yards on 16 attempts so far this season. In 21 kick returns, he has 439 yards, including 10 returns over 20 yards. He also has 95 yards on 11 punt returns.
Cribbs stayed on the sidelines after the injury, wearing his pads, but didn’t return to the game.
"I knew I couldn't," he said. "It doesn't seem too serious, but it hurts."
Cribbs could easily have made a difference in this game, which went into overtime and was won in the final eight seconds.
The team maintains that he’ll be able to play on Sunday, but four dislocated toes will probably affect his ability to cut and avoid tackles, making him a less effective player than he normally is.
