Cleveland Browns’ rookie QB Brandon Weeden steps up game – NFL News
It appears that the magic of self-talking in front of mirror has worked out for Cleveland Browns’ quarterback Brandon Weeden as the rookie’s game against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday showed a clear improvement from his performance in the first game
of the preseason a week earlier.
This also fulfils the wish of coach Pat Shurmur who in spite of his lapses in the first game had posed confidence into the rookie’s abilities, hoping he bounced back strongly.
By the time Weeden left the game, he had completed 12 out 20 passes, measuring 118 yards. The performance is significant given that the team’s young receivers dropped many passes in between.
Weeden has proved that he is looking to improve further and working on the possibility seriously. In his remarks a couple of days earlier, the rookie said he was clearly disappointed about the form he had shown during his first game but said was looking
forward to giving a better performance in the next game.
Interestingly, the young QB said he had done self-talking in front of mirror, probably reminding him of Browns’ situation. He is aware of gravity of the situation that any lapse will lead to the same ending of his career with Browns as of careers of many
other QBs in the past. The incumbent Colt McCoy is the most recent example.
The coach has also expressed satisfaction over the level of improvement in Weeden’s performance but agrees with the player that there is still a long way to go. He is pleased with the fact that the QB himself realises the situation and is keen on seeking
further improvement.
Browns will be able to perform a lot better this season provided Weeden continues to show the sign of progress. Although he has so far done well, the coach and the player recognise it is just the beginning. A real test is awaiting him in the regular season
when the games are played under more pressure and competitive conditions. It is not just a matter of skills and talent but ability to sustain the pressure as well that counts.
