Cleveland Browns rule out possibility of any change at head coaching position – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns have ruled out the possibility of a change at the head coaching position inspite of another year of poor performance on the field in the American professional football league’s regular season 2011.
The Browns, with the score of 4-12, were among the teams finishing the National Football League (NFL) regular season at lower bottom on the league table, and there were speculations that the team management might follow suit of other teams and fire their
head coach, Pat Shurmur.
As many as five NFL teams have released their head coaches, making them scapegoats for their sluggish show-off in the league.
However, the team’s president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert, denied that they were looking at such prospects as sacking their head coach.
"I have the utmost confidence in Pat to get this done," Holmgren said. "No one's on the hot seat. We understand what we're doing, what we're trying to do, understand what happened on the field. We have a good coach, and we have a good coaching staff. You
don't get to where you want to get to by blowing it up every two or three years. You work through the bumps together. You hang in there. You get smarter. You get better players. We're gonna hang in there together and we're gonna get this done. We will get
it done."
It was first season of Pat Shurmur as a head coach at the Browns, which ended up on a dismal note, triggering a criticism against him.
The coach, however, had nothing much to do as the team continued to going through a rebuilding phase and with a couple of players such as quarterback Colt McCoy and Josh Cribbs out for injuries.
The team’s officials said that the coach alone should not be blamed for the team’s below the mark performance yet again.
They said that the coach had done comparatively good job and should be backed for continuing playing his role in the rebuilding of team.
It was Holmgren’s first media briefing since ending of the regular season but the president has not revealed any specific plans in his so-called rebuilding process with next season on his mind.
The coach job was seen on the line after firing of head coaches by other teams including the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags are among the five league’s franchises currently looking for hiring of a fulltime head coach.
Both officials said they believed that Shurmur was a right coach for the Cleveland Browns. They appreciated his role in rebuilding of the team and expected the coach’s role will assume even greater significance in the coming seasons.
They backed their side in preparation for the next season, hoping that they will prevail on the league one day.
