Cleveland Browns to pursue Baylor College’s Robert Lee Griffin III, in talks with Rams -NFL News
The Cleveland Browns have confirmed their intentions of capitalising on the opportunity to sing the top draft pick, Baylor College’s Robert Lee Griffin III, and are set to evaluate him on his pro day workout, on March 21, 2012.
Griffin was due to throw football during the National Football League (NFL) Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, which ended on February 28, 2012.
However, the player decided against it even though he exceeded expectations of the potential teams in all other aspects of the evaluation, including health and fitness.
Also, Browns’ general manager, Tom Heckert, who underwent a heart procedure during the same week, could not attend the Combine and therefore the player’s evaluation was not possible.
Now the player is due to throw football in front of managers and coaches on the pro day and Browns’ GM has confirmed to join them for the evaluation process.
Meanwhile, the manager has also said that Browns are in talks with St. Louis Rams over the potential trade of the number 2 draft pick, currently owned by Rams.
He called the talks to be in the preliminary stage and said that both possibilities, retaining or trading the pick, were on the cards.
He said:
"We feel very comfortable staying at [No.] 4 and getting a good player there, and that could happen. And we feel comfortable in moving down and getting more picks, we really do. It's way early to start talking about this stuff."
On the other hand, Heckert also said that he will evaluate some other quarterbacks, which he thinks are the genuine talent untapped.
They include Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill.
The GM said he will monitor Weeden on his pro day on Friday, March 09, 2012, and will include him in their final decision making process.
According to the GM, both of the players are not far behind Andrew Luck and Griffin III, and can equally impress managers with their form and performance.
Heckert was talking to media for the first time since he had the heart surgery, which hampered the team’s plans for evaluation of their draft prospects during the Combine.
The manager said that the procedure was not of serious nature and that he was feeling healthy and fit.
Browns’ present quarterback is Colt McCoy, who was drafted two years ago. He will return from a concussion related injury to join the squad next season for his third year with the team.
If the team is successful in recruiting the draft pick and decides to keep him, there is a possibility that it might release McCoy, but the manager denied having such plans at the moment.
