Cleveland Browns want Brandon Weeden and Colt McCoy to compete for starting role-NFL News
Rookie quarterback, Brandon Weeden, faces a challenge to prove his credentials for the starting job before he is given the role by Cleveland Browns.
An opportunity for him to prove his talent and skills for the first time since his arrival in Cleveland off the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, may be the team’s rookie minicamp, due to start from Friday, May 11.
With Browns’ refusal to grant him the starting position straightaway, the field is wide open for Weeden to fight for a starting role.
He will need to challenge Colt McCoy, who is the team’s starting quarterback.
Browns’ coach, Pat Shurmur, said:
"We don't give anybody anything.", adding
"We drafted (our rookies) with the idea that they could come in and start or until they start, could be effective role players. But, they have to come here and do it. By doing it, that's when we talk about competing. That's where they are at and they understand
that."
So the tone of competition the rookie QB faces is quite set for him.
He is going to appear in the minicamp with other rookie teammates, and is expected to be counted and credited for his performance.
The coach’s statement has cleared the entire hype developed around the prospects of giving a starting role to Weeden straightaway.
A strong perception had developed from the comments by football commentators and some of the team’s officials regarding Browns' inclination of putting Weeden in front of McCoy on the starting line.
Apparently McCoy, who had been through some uncertainty about his future with Browns, has not said anything about the competition for the leading role.
McCoy is reported to have fully recovered from the concussion suffered in the later part of the 2011/12 NFL season. He is also going to be available for the team’s offseason activities.
It is yet to be seen how both the quarterbacks get along and help each other in their respective roles.
