Cleveland Cavaliers Rookie Kyrie Irving might represent Australia in Olympics - NBA Update
US Basketball team recently announced its 20 man squad for the London Olympics 2012.
The pool, more or less is what was expected to be, consisting of the NBA giants Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Derrick Rose, Deron Williams, Rudy g*y, Kevin Love and so on with
Blake Griffin being the only odd one out.
Naturally, also rookies failed to make it in the list, but as far as Kyrie Irving is concerned that might not be a problem as he is in loop to represent Australia at the grand stage.
Irving, the number one pick of the 2011 NBA draft was acquired by Cleveland Cavaliers and in his short career so far, he has already made a massive impact. Irving hails from Australia and has an option to represent Australian Basketball
team, which according to him is a strong possibility now.
“That’s probably my only choice right now,” he said “It will be a long-term decision, and I’m hoping to know in the next month or so. I’ll keep you updated.”
The only problem however that he has is the dual-nationality. If he decides to play for Australia, he won’t be able to represent US team in future, so it is a dodgy move and Irving for sure would be brainstorming whatever decision
he ultimately comes up with.
“Honestly, it’s going to be a process if I decide to play for Australia,” he said. “A lot of things have to do with FIBA and Australian lawyers, but I’m not ruling out that possibility of playing with the Australian team. If it
happens, and I play for Australia, great. But if I don’t, then in 2016 I’ll decide again.”
The way Kyrie has started his NBA career, things look promising. Although it’s too early to predict greatness, the skills and the speed he has displayed so far give a hint of what a threat he would become in the future. He has
only played 11 games in NBA and has already been the highest scorer for the Cavs in most of those games. At the moment, he averages 17.5 points per game but the figure is definitely going to rise in the next few months.
Although representing your country in Olympics is a big moment for every sportsman, he might just have to hold himself in order to concrete his foot in the NBA. It will be interesting nevertheless to see if he opts for Olympics
or not.
