Cleveland Cavaliers acquire point guard Jeremy Pargo from Memphis Grizzlies – NBA News
The Cleveland Cavaliers have added another player to their back-court in the offseason. The Cavs have reached an agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies for the trade of backup point guard Jeremy Pargo.
D.J. Kennedy will return to the Grizzlies in return for Pargo. Cleveland is hoping that by adding depth to the back court, they will be able to efficiently use their star point guard Kyrie Irving, who was named rookie of the year
last season and the Cavs are banking on him to become their franchise player in the future, attempting to build a team around him.
Pargo has played only one season so far in the NBA. Averaging 9.6 minutes per game, he was able to land 2.9 points and 1.3 assists in 44 games he played for Memphis, of which he started in 5. He did not get much playing time and
independence while with the Grizzlies as he played a backup to Mike Conley.
Now in his new team, he is likely to get an even smaller role, since Irving will use up most of the minutes. However, Cleveland are impressed with the potential of Pargo and look to use him effectively next season.
“Our approach remains consistent as we try to bring in young talent, create future opportunity with draft picks as potential assets, and maintain flexibility. Jeremy adds depth to our backcourt. He is a young, aggressive, athletic
guard who we feel fits well with our style of play, both defensively and offensively,” said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant while talking to the Associated Press.
The Memphis Grizzlies are also short of a swingman, after O.J. Mayo signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. Kennedy played 2 games for the Cavaliers last season and averaged 6 points and 3.5 rebounds with a field goal percentage
of 41.7%. He is a buzzing young talent but still a few years behind Mayo. It will be difficult for him to instantly step into Mayo’s shoes and provide for Memphis what he did last season.
