Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson still recovering from neck injury - NBA Update
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson, who missed Cavaliers last two games against the Boston Celtics due to a neck infection, might not be featuring in the team’s upcoming few games as well.
The 25 years old player experienced pain in his neck for which he was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, a few days ago. When tests were carried out, it turned out he had a “soft tissue” infection, which although, is not a serious injury but takes a little time to heal.
He was released from the clinic recently and is now on antibiotics treatment. The team is monitoring him closely on day-to-day basis and further tests are expected to be carried on his neck on Wednesday evening.
Cavaliers Coach Byron Scott is however not too concerned with the injury and believes Daniel will be fit and will be seen in action soon.
"He's feeling a lot better," Scott said before the Cavs hosted the Celtics. "I do know the Cleveland Clinic (doctors) are going to do more tests to make sure everything is OK. But other than that, we're just glad he's OK."
Cavaliers are scheduled to play two games this week - against Orlando Magic on Friday and then against the reigning champions Dallas Mavericks - and Daniel’s inclusion in the final line-up will be based on the tests that would be carried out today.
Daniel has played 20 games so far in this shortened season and although his average is bit on the low side 7.1 points per game, but he still is a valuable member of the team.
He is a three-point specialist and has already proved it in his short stint this season. In his best performance of the season, which came against the New Jersey Nets on the eve of New Year, Daniel pounded 19 points on 5-for-7 from the long range, helping his team to down the Nets 98-82.
He is now out for an indefinite amount of time yet his injury has given a chance to rookie Mychel Thompson to show his skills at the big stage. Thompson played his first ever game in the Cavs scrimmage against the Celtics on Tuesday night.
Byron thinks very highly of Thompson.
"I thought he was excited to get in and play. When I called his name I looked dead at him and didn't get the deer-in-the-headlights look. He just took his shirt off like he was ready to go and he went out there and played that way."
It would be interesting to see now if Thompson manages to cement his place in the team during Gibson’s absence or not.
