Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wants NBA to bring back the All-Star weekend to Ohio
After his young player, Kyrie Irving got named the Rookie of the Year, Cleveland Cavaliers owner, Dan Gilbert has shown intent to ask the NBA Commissioner David Stern about bringing back the All-Star weekend to Ohio.
"That is something definitely that we are interested in," Gilbert said, "I hope in the next few years we'd be able to get it, I'm going to do our best and I'll talk to the commissioner (David Stern). We'll be talking to the league very shortly."
He then went on to discuss the level of improvements that have been made in downtown Cleveland which includes Gilbert`s Horseshoe opening up on Monday. In recent years, there has also been developments like a new convention centre, medical mart and several new hotel which Dan believes are enticing enough for the NBA to consider giving Cleveland the honour of hosting the weekend.
Gilbert also took note of the fact that the league prefers to host the event in the warmer cities and the All-Star weekend taking place in Western Conference cities for the past eight years before Orlando is mere proof of the fact.
Another reason for holding the weekend is to make use of the weather and the city having a wide variety of hotels to accommodate thousands of fans and media contingents arriving into the city for the glamorous weekend.
However Cleveland does not have a chance in the next two years with the weekend scheduled for Houston next season and the one after that to take place in the city of New Orleans.
The last time the city of Cleveland had the honour of hosting the event was back in 2007 when the NBA was celebrating their 50th anniversary and huge ceremony to pay tribute to the 50 best players of all time was organized back then.
The nearest possibility of the All-Star weekend taking place in the city of Cleveland is 2015 and that too is not a sure possibility as the ‘Big Apple’ team New York Knicks have had a long drought of the mid season event. Another strong candidate to lay claims on the hosting of the event are the newly found franchise of the Brooklyn Nets who moved from New Jersey.
