Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Baron Davis goes back to school – NBA Update
Baron Davis, the burly point guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is headed back to school to complete his degree. The Cavaliers star is attending classes at the UCLA in order to complete his education, with around two years left
on his degree.
It’s the first time Baron has been on campus since the late 1990s, before the player got drafted to the NBA as the third overall pick in 1999. Baron says he is enjoying himself at college and that completing the degree is important
for him.
"I felt the best opportunity for me to accomplish something would be to go back to school and use the time wisely," said Davis who enrolled in the UCLA African-American history 1600-1865, U.S. history 1900-1928 and fundamental
screenwriting in the summer.
The NBA lockout is what gave him the opportunity to do so. Davis said it was important to him for a personal standpoint and was the wish of his late grandmother Lela Nicholson, who died in March.
Davis stands out at Campus and in class, not only because of playing in the NBA, but also because of his healthy beard. The beard has become a trade mark of Davis and the player has played a part in growing its legend among fans.
Baron keeps updating his Facebook page with photos and also gives tips on beards on twitter.
He concedes that he gets noticed a bit too often because of it, but the point guard, who hails from Los Angeles, says he is ok with it.
As the summer winds down Baron’s attention is turning back to basketball though. With the NBA in lockout and the players not allowed to train with their respective franchises, Baron is looking to organize informal training sessions
with his Cleveland teammates.
"As we get closer to the season, we really need to start to develop that chemistry and camaraderie, because we're going to be a whole new group," said Davis, a 12-season veteran. "We all need to get in the gym together and find
that spirit early and get off to a good start."
It is important that Baron takes responsibility as he is one of the senior most players in a roster full of youth and inexperience. Davis joined the revamped Cavaliers side at the deadline last year and has since taken on the leadership
mantle at the troubled franchise.
Among his teammates in Cleveland this season will be Kyrie Irving, The young point guard drafted first overall is someone the fans have great expectations from and Davis says he is looking forward to nurture Irving’s talent,
"He has a really good game, and he'll only continue to grow and grow where he'll be in a position to dominate. That's the role I want to play for him, to help him be able to dominate."
