Cleveland Cavaliers rule out Anderson Varejao for rest of season – NBA Update
Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao has been ruled out for the rest of the season with soreness in his right wrist. Anderson broke his wrist on February 10th against Milwaukee Bucks, and although the fracture
has healed, the soreness and swelling is not going away from the area surrounding his wrist. Hence, the team management has decided to call him off for the rest of the season and get him healthy and fully ready for the next one.
Varejao was seemingly disappointed as this is the second season in a row that he will not be able to close with his team. He only managed to play 31 games last season after he suffered a foot injury and a consequent surgery.
“It’s terrible that I'm not going to be able to play this season. The good thing is the bone is healed now. I'm going to keep working out. Unfortunately I can't play this season anymore, but I'm very excited for the Olympics” said
Varejao.
Varejao had been having a very good season, averaging 10.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. The Cavaliers have been dealing with injury trouble throughout the lock-out shortened season, much like many other teams. Star rookie
Kyrie Irving and Anthony Parker both missed significant games with injuries as well, blowing out any chances of Cleveland making it into the playoffs.
Byron Scott, the Cavs coach rued the fact and insisted that if he had his star players in his roster, the Cavs would have been in fighting chance of making it into the playoffs.
"If you have a healthy Andy for the whole season, and a healthy Kyrie and I think AP missed 16 games I don't know, you're probably looking at 10, 12, 15 more wins" said Scott.
Varejao is not going to be playing any games for the rest of the season but he does intend on playing for his home country of Brazil in the summer Olympic Games at London this year. He has expressed his desire to play for Brazil
and is quite excited about the opportunity.
Even after the injury, Anderson seems quite convinced that he will be able to fully recover well in time for the London games. However his coach had a word of advice for him, advising him not to play if he did not fully recover
from the injury;
"The one thing about guys playing for their country, I understand that. I wouldn't discourage it one bit. That's something that has nothing to do with me." said Coach Scott.
