Cleveland Cavaliers show interest in signing Brandon Roy - NBA Report
Brandon Roy, the former Portland Trail Blazers star guard, has created a lot of sensation after coming out of his retirement.
The 27-year-old shooting guard bid farewell to the game back in 2011 due to his knee conditions. However, ever since he has shown his intent to re-enter the mainstream, a lot of franchises have started to consider the possibility of hiring him.
In that list of franchises, Cleveland Cavaliers are believed to be the front runners. A source close to the club has disclosed the news on the basis of anonymity as no formal discussions between the two parties has taken place so far.
Brandon, a three time All-Star averaged 19 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 boards in 321 games played over the time span of 4 years. He was acquired by Portland Trail Blazers as number 6th overall pick in 2006 and was named as the 2007 rookie of the year. However the Washington native had a degenerative knee condition that ultimately forced him to retire last December.
Roy has rested for nealry a year and now considers himself fit for the game. Cavs do have a lot of salary cap, around $20 million, and if the franchise decides to rope him in, they can do so with ease.
According to league sources, the Golden State Warriors are also interested in Roy. The Bay Area franchise had been looking for quality wingers throughout the off season and recently drafted in small forward Harrison Barnes with their 7th pick. They have a good point guard in Stephen Curry and if Roy can join the team, the Warriors backcourt will be one to watch out for.
However the decision is subjected to Brandon’s health. He underwent the same procedure Kobe Bryant had on his knee last off season and given the improvement in Bryant’s movements and game, Brandon stands a good chance.
It is not clear that how much money Roy would settle down with, but one thing is for sure that he will not accept the veteran’s minimum $1 million per annum. Warriors have their $5 million mid level exception but they are also eying others options as they look to add more depth to their roster.
Another potential franchise that is considering Roy’s option are Chicago Bulls. Currently without their floor manager Derrick Rose, they need a solid scorer and Roy fits that equation.
Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers and the Dallas Mavericks are also believed to be genuine suitors for Roy.
