Cleveland Indians: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
After improving their win-loss record to 53-52 at the end of July 2011, the Cleveland Indians gave impressive results in the month of August 2011 as well, which helped them achieve a decent position in the Wild Card standings.
Losing a three match series to Kansas City Royals in the last week of July, the Indians were hoping to restore some of the lost pride with a strong performance in their four game series against Boston Red Sox. Emerging victorious 9-6 in the opening encounter,
the Indians looked set to take control of the series. However, Manny Acta and his men failed to live up to the expectations in the following two games to give their rivals a crucial 2-1 lead.
The Indians put up a brave fight in game two but they lacked firepower in several important areas of the game, which eventually led to their downfall. However, Team Manager, Manny Acta still showed faith in his boys and he aimed to turn things around with
hard work in final match of the series. Despite trailing 1-2 in a four match series, the Indians raised their game to a higher level in front of their home crowd to level a thrilling and exciting series.
Justin Masterson earned his ninth win of the season to let his side take control of the match.
"Right now, our main guy has been Justin Masterson," the manager said. "He's a guy who from now on, and for a while now, we have tried to keep him on the five days routine because he's the guy that we want to see out there every five days. It's good that
Ubaldo doesn't have to feel like he's a guy who's going to stop it every time."
Carlos Santana was also brilliant with the bat as he bagged a 3-3 tie with a two run homer in sixth innings and drove in three runs in three hits.
The Indians had a tough series against the inform Texas Rangers losing two of the three games. Making a large number of unforced errors in the opening game, the Indians let their opponents get off to a great start in the series. Although they bounced back
to level the series, they were outclassed in all aspects of the game in third and final game, which dented their confidence levels considerably.
Manny Acta and his men seemed a lot more confident in their next series against Detroit Tigers, winning the series 2-1. They ended the month on a positive note with wins over Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics, which
kept them in the race to qualify for the post-season.
