Cleveland Indians: Regular season results – MLB May 2011
After ending the month of April with an impressive 18-8 win-loss record, the Indians were hoping to continue their excellent form in May 2011 as well. Thrashing Detroit Tigers 3-0, Cleveland displayed some high quality baseball in a series against a very
strong baseball club.
In their next three match series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Indians got off to a dream start as the clinched the opening encounter with a 4-1 score. Orlando Cabrera continued to impress his Manager as he hit a tie-breaking RBI single in ninth innings.
In the pitching department, Fausto Carmona earned his third win in four starts to help his side overcome the Orioles challenge and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Orioles fought back brilliantly in the following game to level the series at 1-1. Both teams inflicted heavy blows on each other in third and final game of the series. But, it was the Indians who eventually came out on top, securing a narrow 4-3 victory
to win the series 2-1. Manny Acta praised the efforts of his men and he encouraged them to play aggressively in the upcoming games as well.
"They're very resilient and they believe in themselves," Indians’ manager Manny Acta said. "It's early, but the amount of times that we have done it late in the games, really kind of gives them confidence."
The Indians had a tough time on the field against the Los Angeles Angels, suffering their second series loss in less than two weeks time. Making a large number of unforced errors in all three games, they let their rivals dictate terms. In their next three
match series against Tampa Bay Rays, Manny Acta and his men got off to very good start as they clinched the opening clash 5-4. For the fourth time, Indians had pulled off a victory with heroics in their final at bat.
"Usually the Phillies and the Yankees, those teams are the ones doing that. But we're doing it. It's just going to help us later in the year when we do hit that tough stretch or that weeklong stretch where you don't seem to do anything right." Manny Acta
said in a post match interview.
The Indians dominated the rain affected series against Seattle Mariners and they ended the month strongly with series victories over Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays, which improved their win-loss record to 32-20. Cleveland put in
some impressive performances during the month of May. They played aggressively and built up some confidence in the team. The Indians will be looking to improve their efforts in the coming months to climb in the standings.
