Cleveland Indians acquire first baseman Chris McGuiness from Texas Rangers – MLB Update
Coming from 2012 Major League Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings in Nashville, the Cleveland Indians took a bold step acquiring first baseman Chris McGuiness from the Texas Rangers Minor League affiliates. The talented first baseman came into the Indians according to the Rule 5 draft while in exchange, Cleveland lost two pitchers.
Playing at Frisco, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, McGuiness showed a consistent run in last season. He played with a hitting average of .268 along with 25 doubles, 23 home runs, 77 RBI and 65 total runs in 123 games while on his 456 at-bats, he struck out 107 times and drew 69 walks. Later he also won the Arizona Fall League's Joe Black Most Valuable Player Award and proved his offensive nature of plays.
“I don't like being in the spotlight, I wasn't high draft pick. It's good bad. You're in the spotlight, but you get more chances to succeed or fail [as a high pick]. It's the same game. The way I look at it, if you play put up good numbers, someone's going to want you out there and want you to put on their uniform," said McGuiness, who was on hand prior to the AFL championship game at Scottsdale Stadium on Saturday to accept the award.
McGuiness added with more detail, "It's a huge honor, I just wanted to come out here -- you always hear how good the league is -- and compete, try not to get lost in the mix with all these good players.”
Earlier in 2009, McGuiness was drafted by the Boston Red Sox franchise. He started his career later that year while in 2010, he was traded to Texas Rangers in Jarrod Saltalamacchia deal. Since then, he has been playing quite consistently and proving his game at every level.
Now the Indians have added him in their roster but his Major League debut is still a far cry as he first needs to get fully involved with the new environment. The Indians’ game plan is also slight different from the Rangers as they play more open and offensive.
