Cleveland Indians avoid salary arbitration with Asdrubal Cabrera – MLB News
The Cleveland Indians have avoided salary arbitration with their switch-hitting infielder Asdrubal Cabrera signing him for one-year. The deal is worth $4.55 million and will give Asdrubal another year to play with the Tribe who previously connected to potential salary dispute.
Signing a successful contract with Cabrera, the Indians' general manager Chris Antonetti said in the media, “Obviously, we’re pleased to get a negotiated settlement done and avoid the arbitration process; this didn’t really deviate from what we were thinking the total would be, it’s what we expected. I don’t want to make too much of that, we have no hidden agenda or ulterior motive to do that.”
He added, “This was not necessarily calculated or some kind of strategy. When long-term commitments make sense, our ownership is committed to making them. We certainly have made plenty of offers that extend beyond the 2012 season.”
Cabrera, whose past four year record has been at a pretty consistent pace, certainly possesses some decent baseball skills and always gives his best. Playing with a batting average of .281 along with 43 home-runs, 258 RBIs and .343 OBP, Cabrera has never showed any loop holes in his game.
Last season, Cabrera looked confident and played respectively well achieving a .273 batting average along with 25 homers, 93 RBIs and .332 OBP, surely making him a very productive player.
Experts believe that Cabrera’s one year contract will benefit the Indians next season. They will use him on several different positions in which he has always liked to play in the past. His specialty as switch hitter in-fielder is an important position and whenever his team needed him, he has performed with a big heart going an extra mile to achieve good results.
On the other hand, the Tribe is also making progress on several possessions. They recently cleared their entire 21 player roster without going into any arbitration hearings. This has also made things slightly easy for the Indians as compared to other Major League teams who have yet to solve their arbitration issues with their key players.
