Cleveland Indians decline option on Grady Sizemore, pick up option on Fausto Carmona – MLB News
The Cleveland Indians have finally announced their decision on centre-fielder Grady Sizemore and right- hand pitcher Fausto Carmona. The Indians management announced on Monday morning regarding much awaited final ruling of their two potential players’ future
commitment with the team.
According to that announcement, the Indians declined the option on Sizemore making him a free agent and only picked up options on Carmona for the next Major League Baseball season.
Exercising options on both these players were determined by the Indians’ general manager (GM) Chris Antonetti. This again refers as how big his presence is in Cleveland’s franchise and how he can take decisions on his own without consulting anyone else in
the management. According to some inside sources, this very decision has direct linkage with the GM of Cleveland. Antonetti previously did not mention any personal partiality with both these players but last week when a couple of reporters asked him regarding
the future of Sizemore and Fausto, he boldly replayed and explained in detail.
Antonetti said “We thought that we were best served at this point declining Grady's option, we will still stay in touch with his representatives and Grady offseason and remain he will remain part of this organization. I think both parties remain open-minded
to continuing the relationship. It's just not at where we value.”
Carmona’s previous year’s stats are relatively good and this might be another reason why the Indians decided to pick his options. He went 13-14 along with a 3.77 ERA, 93-50 (win loss) record from overall 2009-10 campaign. He pitched and went with 13-19,
5.89 ERA for the Indians in the following year that allowed Cleveland to go further in the American League Central Championship in 2007.
Now, the Indians have picked up Carmona options and brought Derek Lowe into their franchise, the overall position of the Indians is in good condition and they might well have set their likely rotation for the next MLB season. It will be interesting to see
where Sizemore ends up, as he is still considered to be a tremendous player.
