Cleveland Indians defeat Detroit Tigers 10-3 – MLB Update
Ubaldo Jimenez threw eight strong innings on Wednesday, August 10 and Jason Kipnis went for four runs to help the Cleveland Indians win by 10-3 at Progressive Field.
The game was punctuated by big hits and strong innings that Ubaldo pitched that resulted in the team’s victory.
But for the team manager, Ubaldo’s performance was instrumental in winning the game. "That was exactly what we needed, especially after our bullpen went 12 innings," said Indians’ manager Manny Acta, who had to use eight pitchers in a 14-inning marathon
win in Tuesday's series opener. "I feel like Ubaldo could have thrown a shutout. He was fantastic."
While Jimenez could easily go for a shut-out game, the three-inning fourth run shattered his hopes. But he was not dissatisfied. "It was special being my first start here," said Jimenez, flashing a high-beamed smile. "Every count. Every pitch. Every inning.
It's really fun.”
For the team manager, this deal to bring Jimenez in the Cleveland Indians’ fold has indeed paid. "Every team has a guy like that," Acta said. "When you have a guy like that, you feel like you can win every time out."
After Ubaldo Jimenez threw the first inning as a shut-out, Carlos Santana scored the first run against Rick Porcello. The second inning brought about three more runs as Ezequiel Carrera scored a single while the rookie Jason Kipnis hit a homer to take the
lead to 4-0 by the end of second inning.
The only chance that the Detroit Tigers had to stage a comeback in the game was in the fourth when Ryan Raburn scored a single followed by a two run RBI or Wilson Betemit that brought the Indians lead down to 4-3.
However, the Indians’ offence sparked again in the fourth inning against Porcello. Jason Kipnis drove in his third of the game and Asdrubal Cabrera singled to centre while Travis Hafner and Kosuke Fukudome had their respective singles to take the lead up
to 8-3 for the Indians.
As the lead was secured, Ubaldo Jimenez, after giving up three runs in the fourth, did not allow any other Detroit hitter to score any other run. Porcell’s lack of performance, understandably, prompted a change in bull-pen.
David Pauley came to pitch for the Tigers. He went for a scoreless fifth, but the sixth inning that he pitched had once again individual singles of Travis Hafner and Shelley Duncan that took the lead to 10-3 for the Indians.
Ubaldo Jimenez then went into the eighth inning with his scoreless innings that he pitched, and Frank Hermann came as a closer to toss a hitless and scoreless ninth to secure an easy 10-3 lead for the Indians.
