Cleveland Indians defeat Minnessota Twins 6-5 – MLB Update
The Cleveland Indians achieved an incredible upswing on Sunday, September 18 to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 at Target Field in Minnesota.
The Indians came from behind after going down by 3-0, and scored six times in the seventh inning to reverse the tide.
Carl Pavano whose exceedingly good spell had kept the Indians at bay could not carry the momentum and fell prey to the sudden surge that the Indians staged as they won the game 6-5, much to the huge disappointment of the Twins.
"The whole season they've been very relentless and have never given up," Cleveland’s manager Manny Acta said. "They know we're one good inning from doing stuff like that. Pavano was pitching so well and we just hung in there and when he came out of the game,
we took advantage and had some good at-bats and Shelley had the big hit."
The complexion of the game changed when a Minnesota error forced an extra out. With the win now, the Indians swept the series against the straining Twins which have only won 59 games this season compared to the Indians whose wins stand at 75.
"We're not done yet, we've got a lot of games to play," Acta said. "But it's very important to us. Our goal is to finish second and to play above .500.”
Sunday’s game began with Joe Benson scoring the first run for the Twins in the second inning. Justin Masterson gave up two hits and a run to the Twins as Carl Pavano kept pitching unusually good innings against the seemingly cornered Indians’ hitters.
Jason Repko made it 2-0 for the Twins in the fourth inning while Brian Dinkelman scored a single in the sixth inning to triple the lead for the team. It was in the seventh inning of Pavano that the game took a turn.
Shelley Duncan homered to left to score the first run for the Indians as Jason Kipnis made it 3-2 with his single. Carlos Santana and Jim Thome’s respective singles made it 4-3 for the Indians. Duncan then had a two-run double to effectively put the team
in charge with a decent 6-3 lead.
Danny Valencia and Ben Revere of the Twins tried to bring the team back in the game with their singles but that proved unsuccessful as Chris Perez pitched a shut-out ninth to end the game with a 6-5 victory for the Indians.
Masterson had a strong game, giving up only three runs in his six innings while Chris Perez had the 34th save of the season in 38 chances he has got so far.
The Indians put in tremendous performance as they fought hard throughout the game and got a much needed win against the Twins.
