Cleveland Indians defeat New York Yankees 1-0 – MLB Update
The Cleveland Indians put in a good performance to save them from a four game series sweep as they defeated New York Yankees 1-0 at Yankee Stadium, New York on Monday, June 13.
Monday’s game was exclusively in the hands of the starting pitchers of both the New York and Cleveland. Yankees whose offence was simply a personification of perfection, failed to rise to the occasion this time.
In contrast, the Indians whose performance was almost average, if not outright unsatisfactory, played a different game this time. Add to it the fact that Jeter had to leave the game that served as an advantage for the Indians.
Winning their previous three games by big margins (11-7), (4-0) and (9-1), the New York Yankees struggled to keep the ball rolling on Monday when they descended on the field, as their woes quadrupled by the fitness problem of Derek Jeter.
Only four hits away from his 3000 hits, the strained right-calf took him to hospital for an MRI exam.
"I'm worried about him," New York Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. “Just keep our fingers crossed and hopefully it's not too serious. He just walked off the field and you could tell he was done. You don't see him come out of games."
Carlos Carrasco came down hard on the Yankees since the start, disallowing the hitters to comfortably settle like the previous games. Carrasco was effective enough, clearly succeeding in his game strategy.
Asdrubal Cabrera got an opportunity in the fourth inning when A. J. Burnett faltered. Asdrubal singled left, allowing Michael Burnett to score, giving a tough 1-0 lead to the Cleveland Indians, something rarely seen in the last three games.
Carrasco kept his march going with more zeal and kept obstructing the Yankees’ hitters.
While he remained successful in his task, the Indians’ manager Manny Acta said, "I thought that Carrasco gave us a terrific pick-me-up. He started shaky with a lot of traffic out there, but I can't say enough about the job that he did."
Carrasco threw a scoreless seventh inning and was then relieved by Tony Sipp, who did not disappoint his manager, keeping the 1-0 lead intact in the eighth inning.
As the Yankees were still determined to sweep the series, Chris Perez threw strong and solid 9th inning, not allowing a single hit to pave the way for 1-0 victory for the Cleveland Indians.
