Cleveland Indians edge past Los Angeles Angels 4-3: MLB Recap
Shin-Soo Choo collected a two-run double to help the Cleveland Indians take a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the second contest of a three-game series on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old right-handed hurler, Alex White (1-0), who got his first career victory in six innings of work, gave up three runs, seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. White had allowed two runs over six innings in his big league debut last
Saturday as the Indians survived 13 innings of baseball to defeat the Detroit Tigers 3-2.
It was the Indians ninth victory in their previous 11 contests.
The AL pitcher of the month for April, Jered Weaver (6-2) permitted four runs, seven hits and two walks without a strikeout over the six innings to end Anaheim's three-game win streak. It was the first time in his career that he pitched six innings
and did not register a strikeout. He was 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA in his last three starts against the Cleveland Indians.
After Howie Kendrick hit a one-out single, Vernon Wells scored a two-run homer in the second inning to give Los Angeles an early lead.
“I just made one mistake to Wells and he made me pay for it,” White said. “But I had good stuff, and a good two-seamer that I was able to locate down and in on some righties. Throughout the game, it was probably the best thing I had going for me.”
The Indians pulled within a run in the fourth inning when Carlos Santana scored on a sacrifice fly from Orlando Cabrera. Santana doubled and added his third run on a Travis Hafner’s single.
Cleveland went ahead 4-2 in the fifth inning when Grady Sizemore and Asdrubal Cabrera had two-out walks and both scored on a double from Choo. Santana then added an RBI single.
"Sometimes you go out there without your best stuff and battle. In the fourth and fifth inning I got away from my game plan. You have days like that. Sometimes you have to tip your cap," said Weaver.
Los Angeles responded with a run in the sixth inning when Torii Hunter came home on a sacrifice fly by Wells. Hunter drew a one-out walk and scored his third run on a Howie Kendrick’s single before crossing the plate.
Maicer Izturis ran Los Angeles out of a rally in the eighth inning. He attempted to move from first to third base on a grounder by Howie Kendrick. It happened so when Third baseman Jack Hannahan could not make the play at second so he threw to first
for the force. Izturis then tried to take third on the throw, but first baseman, Carlos Santana, made the throw back to Hannahan, who tagged out Izturis and ended the inning.
