Cleveland Indians exercise team options on starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez – MLB Update
Cleveland Indians finished 2012 Major League Baseball season at fourth position in American League Central Division with 68-94 win-loss record along with .420 winning percentage.
With this poor result and the extra defensive plays especially late in the regular season certainly put them in a narrow position. Their management is now taking some serious steps to make sure that the Indians do well in the next Major League competition.
Different news are coming that starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez’s $5.75 million options for 2013 has been picked by the Indians which also include options for next season’s new contract.
Jimenez finished this past regular season achieving 5.40 ERA along with 9-17 win-loss, 143 strike-outs and 1.61 WHIP.
For a better season, the Indians have also taken some other significant decisions. They already declined $13 million options on designated hitter Travis Hafner and also did not consider $6 million option on right hander pitcher Roberto Hernandez which will make the free agency market more open in the coming days.
“The injuries were really frustrating, I spent a lot of time working out staying in shape behind the scenes and during the off-season so I could stay in the lineup. To be hurt, to miss a significant amount of playing time, is really devastating. You just try to get better as fast as you can," said Hafner on his past season’s overall performance.
He added, "When you get hurt like that during the season, your timing and rhythm are never the same, When I signed in 2007, I really anticipated getting the to playoffs a few more times than we did, We live here. I know how hungry this city.”
Travis Hafner is a good player. Though his future is uncertain with the Indians but still many believe that he will re-sign with the franchise where he already played almost nine years.
Hafner started his career from the Texas Rangers and came into the Indians in 2003 and since then, he is playing quite consistently. He finished 2012 Major League Baseball campaign hitting at .228 along with 12 homers, 34 RBIs and .346 OBP.
