Cleveland Indians looking to influence young guns with veteran fire
If things couldn’t get interesting for the Cleveland Indians, they just changed.
The club has an average age of 26 in its 40-man squad.
With a pack of young guns in the club house, necessary changes were made in the mix when they brought in 33 year-old, Chad Durbin, to replace the 25 year-old, Aaron Laffey, in the squad.
However, this is not something seen as ordinary for the Tribe. The club has brought on other players with experience in the mix and this is a change that’s coming into effect in the recent days.
Manager, Manny Acta, is looking to bring honour to the side in the coming months when the Major League Baseball season goes into high gear.
The club is currently working on its prospects and players in the side in the Cactus League games. The club has a tough season ahead and there have been considerable changes in the team to ponder over.
Orlando Cabrera, Austin Kearns, and infielder, Adam Everett, are the new guys in the mix. Their selection will come soon if they’re able to live up to their expectations in Surprise, Arizona.
However, Manny isn’t trying to raise the average age in the club.
"These guys still have a lot left in the tank", Acta said. "The fact Orlando has been on so many winning teams makes him a guy who can help out our younger guys".
Durbin is another player the manager believes to bring leadership and guidance to the club.
"When you have a bunch of young guys, it's always good to have a mix", Acta said. "We didn't do it just to get older. Bottom line, we have to maximize every roster spot we have".
The club has a tough run ahead of them in the American League as they will try to break through the bottom half of the table in the Central division.
"We feel it's a very strong division", said Indians general manager Chris Antonetti. "Three teams [Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit] have had a lot of success the last few years, and Kansas City has great depth -- not only on the Major League team but throughout
their farm system".
