Cleveland Indians lose to Detroit Tigers 7-11 – MLB News
Cleveland Indians lost the second consecutive game against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, May 22 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. With this win, the Tigers won the two-match series 2-0. They won the first
game with 5-1 score on Tuesday at the same venue.
“Every time we would get something going, the rain would come and kind of kill things, It is what it is. There's nothing you can do about Mother Nature," third baseman Mark Reynolds said.
Justin Verlander was the main play maker from the Detroit Tigers’ side, as he tossed five solid innings and allowed five runs on ten hits. He also allowed five earned runs and received one homer on 3.66 ERA.
He remained calm on the mound during his entire spell and he struck out nine Indians’ top hitters with his unplayable sliders.
"I was very much paying attention to the clock, I was kind of lobbying to Jim during the rain delay. If it was five minutes more, I was done," said Verlander.
Not only starting pitcher Verlander, but Tigers relief pitchers also performed wonderfully later in the game. Reliever Drew Smyly was called from the bullpen and he pitched his single inning with fuming pace.
He allowed three runs and received two hits on 2.48 ERA. He also received one homer and two earned runs but at the same time he did not pitch too much looseners and played a key role in his teams’ win.
“Since I've been here, he's been our horse, He has earned that right. I thought he deserved it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
On the other hand, the Indians pitchers could not play their natural aggressive game and not only lost the game, but they also lost the two-match series.
"It was a lucky home run, I was surprised. That's never happened to me," Cabrera said. "
Ubaldo Jimenez pitched four innings and allowed six runs along with six earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three but his ERA rose to blistering high 6.04.
Relief pitcher David Huff pitched one inning as he too was hammered with three runs on four hits on his 15.00 ERA.
