Cleveland Indians overwhelm Minnesota Twins 7-6 – MLB Update
Jim Thome hit the 603rd homer of his career on Friday, September 16 to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6 in the closely-fought game at Target Field, Minnesota.
Having held a distinct record of six of the eight-longest homers in Target Field’s history, Thome’s homer also helped the Cleveland Indians to thwart the advance of the Detroit Tigers from notching the eagerly sought AL Central title.
Carlos Santana homered for the Indians in the second to give the team a lead which was doubled by Kosuke Fukudome in the third. Lonnie Chisenhall and Lou Marson had their way with the former scoring a single while the later going for a two-run single to
take the lead to 5-0 for the Indians.
Rene Tosoni was the first to score a run for the Minnesota Twins in the fifth inning against Ubaldo Jimenez to bring the lead down to 5-2. However, Lonnie Chisenhall had another single to make it 6-2 for the Cleveland Indians by the end of the sixth inning.
Ben Revere and Trevor Plouffe had a single each to make it 6-4 for the Twins. However, Jim Thome got the 603rd homer of his career, 22nd in Target Field’s history to put the Indians in charge of the game by the end of the top of the
ninth inning.
The Twins tried to stage a comeback with Ben Revere’s and Trevor Plouffe’s single in the ninth that brought the score close to 7-6. However, Chris Perez maintained his poise to throw effective pitches to end the game with a 7-6 win.
The 3-hit two-run ninth inning could not save the Twins as Perez concluded the game with 7-6 win for the Indians. Also, the Minnesota Twins have now lost 11 of their last 12 games they have played with six losses in a row.
The three-game series’ second encounter is scheduled to be had in the same ballpark on Saturday. The Indians put in a brilliant performance as they managed to scrape a close victory over the Twins. Minnesota will be looking to improve their performance before
their next match-up.
