Cleveland Indians pitcher Roberto Hernandez Heredia insists young players be honest
The Cleveland Indians’ starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez Heredia formerly known as Fausto Carmona is now preaching to his young countrymen in the Dominican Republic as they must adapt “honesty is the policy” approach in their daily as well as in their professional lives.
He is still in Dominican Republic after cheating the whole system on his false identity as Fausto Carmona was caught last month by his native country’s government. Though later he was released on bail but still his credibility was lost. However, the news is coming from Hernandez Heredia’s agent Jorge Brito who is also in Dominican Republic as he has started a campaign where he is telling young players to be honest and true.
Brito said, “Roberto is telling the young players about what he's experienced and gone through, He's telling them that if you're 18 or 19, not to let anyone convince you that you have to change your identity or age so that you can realize your dream of becoming a major-league player.”
He added, “He tells them you don't have to lie. He's telling them not to listen to the people who are trying to convince you to do that. Those people are trying to take advantage of you. This is Roberto's campaign, He tells kids about dangers of being victimized twice by this process.”
This is somewhat a good initiative from a player whose recent experience has given him a clear output of not being honest. Former Fausto Carmona has searched-out as to how bad it feels when someone knows about your particular lie.
He felt something similar to that when the entire Major League knew about his real identity which was hidden previously for his own reasons. This flared-up lots of people in the US as this is now becoming a common practice by the foreign players to hide their real identities in order to get long hefty contracts.
Though initially Roberto Hernandez might have taken some advantage from the Indians when he signed a contract, but in the long run and contrary to that of one time advantage, his entire dignity lost ground. Not only it hurt the overall scenario of foreign players in the League, but it also damaged the very trust of all foreign players on a bigger prospective for future seasons.
