Cleveland Indians’ relief pitcher Fausto Carmona released on bail outside USA
The Cleveland Indians’ relief pitcher and Dominican Republic native Fausto Carmona was released on bail of $13,000 after getting arrested Thursday outside the US consulate in his home country for using a false identity in order to get a US visa.
Fausto Carmona’s real name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia, but not only did he conceal his identity but his age as well. He is 31, three years older than what he had claimed.
Indians' general manager Chris Antonetti said little and somewhat indirectly for Carmona’s arrest in Dominican Republic.
Antonetti said, “Manny's talked with Fausto directly. We've had numerous conversations with his representatives, as well as people in Major League Baseball and other authorities. There's obviously some uncertainty with Fausto's situation, but as we've talked about throughout the course of the offseason.”
He added, “We've looked for opportunities to improve the team in any way we can. This is a guy we've had interest in for a while. For a lot of reasons, this made sense. Certainly, with the uncertainty about Fausto's situation, it gave us maybe a little more clarity about how he'll fit on the club.”
Carmona’s agent Bean Stringfellow and his entire company were also stunned at their clients’ late incident. Carmona’s representative company issued a statement stating that they are looking into on the possibility of his arrival in US after dealing with original identity and a new work visa.
He is playing in the Indians’ roster since 2006. His free agency was recently in the news but the Indians later exercised team options on him retaining him for the next Major League season.
Though, last year he went 5.25 ERA along with 7-15 win-loss record, 109 strike-outs and 1.40 WHIP but overall his career 4.59 ERA with 53-66 win-loss record and 565 strike-outs shows his consistency.
Released from jail, Carmona offered a brief statement asking for forgiveness from his fans, United States government and Cleveland Indians as he was certainly ashamed at what he did. His gesture was surely advised that he got little excited to play in the upcoming training sessions in Arizona.
