Cleveland Indians sign outfielder Johnny Damon – MLB News
The Cleveland Indians’ have finalised a one year deal worth $1.25 million deal with outfielder Johnny Damon. He will be getting $1.25 million as base salary and rest $1.4 million will be in performance bonuses while other and final details are yet to come in media.
A 17-year veteran and highly experienced Major League Baseball individual, Damon has played with many franchises since his arrival in 1995. He started his career from the Kansas City Royals’ platform while later he went on to play for the Oakland Athletics including Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.
This is his seventh team in MLB as he still feels he has a lot of baseball left in him. As free agent, Damon’s agent Scott Boras tried to engage talks with several teams including Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals, but finally at start of the 2012 season, his one-year fate finalised with the Indians.
This is also a healthy sign for the Indians’ as they signed Damon for this particular season who are also coming with a bad 2011 campaign where they could not win games especially down the stretch late in the regular season.
Their defence was weak as they lost too many games from average opponents and made things difficult for themselves not to show the true thrust late in regulars.
While, this year, the Indians are currently playing slow which is slight worrying manager Manny Acta.
"Five games is not going to make me panic about my bullpen, my offense, defense or anything like that," Acta said. "We have to give it a little more time."
Damon, who has already praised the Indians’ on many occasion as how wonderful he thinks Tribe’s baseball team is. He recently stated in the media which clearly shows his intensions and somewhat desire to be a part of Indians’ roster.
“Cleveland has always been great to me. And I'm looking forward to reuniting with teammates. I had a soccer game tonight and won 13-3 and I was smooth, I feel bad I have to leave them." said Damon.
In the meanwhile, if things remained well for the Indians and for outfielder Damon, positive results will certainly be coming.
