Cleveland Indians sign two talented players with Minor League contracts – MLB News
The Cleveland Indians are making some great progress towards building strong backup for their big team. The Indians management have now added two more players to their farm system in order to give little stability to their team in Cleveland who will eventually help achieving better results next season.
Former Colorado Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs and infielder Gregorio Petit are two players that the Indians inked with Minor League contracts. The contract details were not disclosed in the media, but some sources are speculating that both players will get a one year deal.
Both players are good and possess relative experience in the MLB. They Indians can use these two players for next Spring Training Sessions with an invitation to call for MLB appearance next season. This is also likely that Fausto Carmona might not be returning from Dominican Republic and these two players will get a potential chance to play in the big league.
Spilborghs had some injury issues earlier in the last season but made a successful comeback leaving all his critics thinking how early he has recovered. Before his foot injury, he did a good job playing at .210 with three home-runs and 22 RBI in 200 at-bats. His main weapon to play at all three outfield spots is somehow made the Indians top management realised that he can be a good backup player for Cleveland.
On the other hand, his seven years with the Rockies, also proved great for him. Spilborghs had a career batting average of .272 with 42 homers and 218 RBI in 619 games which makes him some of the great players Rockies has ever produced.
Coming on to Petit’s performances, he did not impress much. But still playing in the Venezuelan Winter League in December 2010, he improved his game and impressed many MLB scouts, who eventually persuaded many League teams to offer him a new contract for next season. Before attending the Winter League in his native country, he had spent all of the 2010 season at Oklahoma City, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers where his performance remained consistent at batting .251 with seven homers and 53 RBI in 130 games at shortstop.
