Cleveland Indians snatch 6-4 triumph over Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
The Cleveland Indians overpowered the League rivals Detroit Tigers 6-4 in the second game of the three-game series at the Comerica Park on Wednesday, June 15 to tie the series 1-all.
Despite an early 3-0 lead with the help of a one-run homer by Brennan Boesch and an RBI double by Alex Avila in the bottom of the first inning, the Tigers failed to carry their momentum to later innings with the bat and also lost their strength with the
ball. The Tigers’ starter Brad Penny, who was enjoying a scoreless game until the start of the fourth inning, went altogether wrong.
In this inning, the Indians’ designated hitter Matt LaPorta drove in a single off Penny to provide his batters a decent start. Just after one pitch, Orlando Cabrera hit a line drive to left-field for an RBI single. Penny then gave another hit which sent
LaPorta to third and Cabrera to second base. With two-bases loaded, catcher Lou Marson entered the field and blistered a hard hit to the right side for a game tier RBI single.
"We have not been playing our game," Orlando Cabrera said. "We did it earlier in the season. (In the fourth inning) we really got the momentum right there and put a couple of hits together and got those runs."
After the game went for 3-all, the Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland replaced Penny with reliever Charlie Furbush, however he could not stop the Indians’ batting. Grady Sizemore hit a sacrifice fly for a game leading RBI single.
"His command wasn't good -- he was just all over the place," Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland said. "But it was 4-4 into the fifth inning, so we had plenty of chances to win this game. We had them on the ropes, but we just didn't do anything against their bullpen."
The score was 4-3 before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning but the Tigers’ Boesch added another RBI single to tie the game 4-all. However, Detroit could not restrict the Indians’ bat as Cabrera hit a line drive single to take the game back into
his side 5-4.
This time, the Indians’ starter Fausto Carmona managed to defend the score. He also received perfect support from the later pitchers as Rafael Perez, Vinnie Pestano, Tim Sipp and Chris Perez did not give away any run over their short spells.
In the seventh inning, LaPorta added another RBI single off the Tigers’ reliever Daniel Schlereth to widen the lead 6-4. The Tigers’ reliever Al Alburquerque and closer David Purcey did not allow any run in the last two innings.
