Clicking/crackling from front right when going over 40 mph--what is it?

It's been going on for a few months now though it seems that it's getting a bit louder now. It's a Saturn SL '99 with 115,000 miles so it could be normal wear on the frame.

My power steering fluid needs flushed and I get a whine when I turn. But what could the crackle be? Would that be a CV joint? Is my wheel gonna fall off if I take a road trip? lol.

  1. Yes, it's a CV joint.  Check the rubber boots on your CV axles, the outer boot on the right axle is more than likely torn.  All the grease has come out, and the joint is no longer lubricated.  When it starts making noise, it's too late to just replace the grease and boot.  You'll need the axle replaced.

  2. sounds like maybe your velocity joint and yes it could, though it wont fall all the way off.  sorry, wish it were better news but it is fixable.
