Cliff Lee gets an offer from the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have been trying to sign Cliff Lee for a long time, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the club went ahead to make an offer of $140 million, spread across the next six years. The contract was put forward by General Manager Brian
Cashman, and though there hasn’t been any reply to the offer, it seems that Lee isn’t going to make a decision so quickly.
However not to steal the fire from under the Yankees, but no one has an idea of what is going through Cliff Lee’s head. No wait; one man does. He happens to be the pitcher’s agent, and it can be expected that the middleman is not going to make a move so
quickly. The winter meetings fuelled speculation over Lee, and that has been the story of the off season so far.
Cliff Lee is being tailed by a long list of ball clubs, and one side in particular is trying to get ahead of the competition. The Texas Rangers are said to be the Yankees main competitors for Lee, and it has to be seen what will become of the saga in the
coming days. Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg recently led a three-man delegation to Arkansas, and it seems there has been some positive news.
"We had a very positive discussion. We reiterated our strong desire for Cliff to remain a key part of the Rangers family. We reaffirmed our commitment to building a championship calibre team, and we also conveyed a menu of possible offers which represented
a substantial additional commitment in terms of both years and dollars," Chuck said.
Though there hasn’t been any movement in the trade window, the Boston Red Sox have also been rumoured to be in the mix. There was rumour of a seven year deal being offered to Lee. It seems that the Yanks and Red Sox are playing mind games at the moment.
Brian Cashman took Carl Crawford out for dinner before he penned a deal with Boston.
"We never made an offer," Cashman said. "I've reached out to everybody and anybody, but it's not a need for us. We have (Brett) Gardner, we have (Curtis) Granderson, we have (Nick) Swisher. I have a certain amount of money I can spend. I'm going to be aggressive
on areas of need, not areas that aren't of need," the Yankees general manager added.
