Cliff Lee heads to free agency
In the 2009 World Series, Cliff Lee won two games for the Philadelphia Phillies, but the team couldn’t win two more to take the Championship. By playoff time in 2010, Lee was part of the Texas Rangers, and again earned a trip to the Series, and again lost,
although this time he lost two games in the final series. Now both Lee and the Texas Rangers have to decide if Lee is the man who can help them take another shot at a MLB championship as he heads into free agency.
"I like this team," Lee said. "It was a very fun team to be on and a very talented group of guys. I expect this team to do really good things next year. There is a lot of firsts for this organization. We were the second-best team in the big leagues. We can
use this as motivation to do better next year."
Lee was traded to the Rangers from the Seattle Mariners in the middle of the 2010 season, he went 4-6 for Texas with a 3.98 ERA in 15 starts, and he was 3-2 in the postseason with a 2.78 ERA.
Despite putting up less than stellar numbers in the regular season, Cliff Lee is undoubtedly one of the best pitchers in the game.
"Cliff has earned the right to see who wants him and how badly," Rangers third baseman Michael Young said. "As a teammate and a friend, I'm going to back him no matter what he does. But it goes without saying, we want him here."
One of the teams sure to court Lee is the New York Yankees who fell victim to Lee in the American League Championship Series this year.
"Whenever there's an attractive player, the Yankees are part of the equation," Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg said. "It's a reality of the industry."
