Cliff Lee keeps New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey from recording his 19th win - MLB Update
The complete silence of the New York Mets’ offence is now hurting R.A. Dickey’s chances for winning the Cy Young Award this year.
After the loss against the Philadelphia Phillies, Dickey has left with a fewer number of opportunities now to win games and strengthen his credentials for clinching the Award.
Despite the fact he threw quality innings and tricked batters with his knucklers just as he has been doing throughout this season, he suffered the loss. On the other hand, Cliff Lee completed eight innings for the Phillies and claimed the victory.
The main reason of Dickey's failure was the poor show of the Mets’ offence.
Earlier Dickey was winning matches on a consistent basis because somehow he was earning reasonable enough support from the batters. Even when he gave up runs he was winning games.
Dickey will be extremely disappointed as the Cy Young Award for which he is a strong contender is at stake now.
His close rival for the Award, namely Gio Gonzalez of the Washington Nationals is likely to supersede him and send Dickey out of contention by putting up better performances.
Gonzalez has already won 19 matches, one more than Dickey. If he keeps delivering splendours on the mound while Dickey struggles he will run away with the Award.
The worst that Dickey can expect is ending the season on a low. Seeing his contributions getting eclipsed by the dismal shows just before the conclusion of the season will be the last thing he will want.
To this effect, Mets’ offence poses a grave danger. It is likely to ruin his better innings in the upcoming games by posting the least number of runs on the scoreboard.
New York’s manager Terry Collins shows sympathy with Dickey as he believes he is doing everything to ensure triumphs for the side. Collins earlier expressed his desire to see Dickey winning the Cy Young Award this year.
“You feel for him, because all he’s done is give himself a chance to win the baseball game,” Terry Collins said.
Dickey is aware of the role that he is supposed to play at the moment.
“Especially the way we’ve been playing, I feel like the team looks to me to try and right the ship,” Dickey said. “To not be able to do that is tough. Tonight was a tough one in that regard.”
As Dickey starts next time, he will be looking forward to sufficient run support from the offence.
