Cliff Lee outduels Ted Lilly, as Philadelphia Phillies defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 – MLB Update
The National League’s leader Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee tossed a perfect game with the ball, as he helped his club to grab a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second outing of the three-game series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles
on Tuesday, August 9.
The left-hand pitcher who is doing it all for the Phillies the last few months, tossed eight scoreless innings to punch out ten batters, including Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. Lee allowed only four hits and two walks to get his twelfth win of the season overwhelming
the strong competitor Ted Lilly.
Lee said, "I obviously put a good swing on it. I was not trying to hit a home run, but once I made contact, I was pretty certain it was gone. Anytime it is a one-run game and you can extend the lead, it is huge. That was a big run for us right there and
it turned out to be the winning run."
Lilly, who was also astonishing for his eight innings in which he allowed only two runs and one walk on 105 pitches, including 74-strikes. His game went to loss in the third inning when the Phillies’ shortstop Jimmy Rollins went over the first baseman allowing
Wilson Valdez to score the game opening run. Lilly also went for a homer by his rival Cliff Lee in the seventh inning.
"Anytime you face first-and-third with nobody out, it's a tough situation regardless of whose up -- much less Ethier and then Kemp behind him," Lee said. "Those were two big strikeouts. If they were able to get a run there, it is a different game. So that
was definitely a big inning for me."
Ryan Madson replaced Lee and gave away the only run to Los Angeles in the ninth inning while the Dodgers’ Blake Hawksworth took the ball in the ninth and tossed scoreless, hitless inning.
Phillies are leading the Majors with the most wins and they have posted the highest win record by a team in baseball in one season. Their journey is continuing and it can make them to one of the devastating team of the Majors for this season.
