Cliff Lee sparks as Philadelphia Phillies humiliate Atlanta Braves 9-0 - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee had a tremendous day with his pitching as he struck-out six batters and pitched his nine innings with an ERA of 2.47 in the Phillies’ 9-0 win against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on September
5.
In the first inning, Phillies’ batters scored two runs to get a 2-0 lead. Placido Polanco and Chase Utley both posted two consecutive runs for the Phillies when Hunter Pence drove a single-run shot to shallow left-field. Ryan Howard moved to second base
to end the first inning. In the second and third inning of the game, the score-board remained empty due to a shaky performance of the batters.
Fourth inning again went in favour of the Phillies as they continued to increase their lead. Phillies took a 4-0 lead at the bottom of fourth inning by taking two quick runs. John Mayberry Jr. and Carlos Ruiz both scored two runs when Shane Victorino bunted
a single-run drive towards left-field. Later on, Victorino advanced to second base on a throwing error.
Phillies advanced to 7-0 by posting three runs on the score-board. Pence doubled to right-field and Utley contributed a single run. Howard moved to third base. The second and third runs during the fifth inning were taken by Howard and Pence when Ruiz singled
off centre-field and Mayberry Jr. occupied second base to end the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, Michael Bourn and Antoan Richardson both popped out to short-stop position without adding any run for the Braves. Lee gave up just five hits in his nine innings pitched and did not surrender any walk on his 100 pitches.
Lee said, “I guess that's pretty good. It is what it is. Obviously that's a good thing anytime you pitch the whole game and not give up any runs. But I don't think this is a time to pat myself on the back.”
Howard struck a one-run homer (401 feet) towards right-field to give the Phillies an 8-0 lead, at the bottom of seventh inning. Phillies got a 9-0 lead in the eighth inning when Polanco bunted a single-run drive to left-field and Lee scored a single run.
Consequently, Phillies went ahead with 1-0 lead in the three-game series at Philadelphia.
