Cliff Lee’s misfortune turns perennial as another undeserving loss comes his way - MLB Update
Another game goes without any solace for the Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee. A near perfect spell of little more than seven innings on Tuesday became useless when the Phillies’ offence did not step up to capitalise upon this.
Against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the loss which incurred was another reminder of how far the pitchers’ better performances have been eclipsed by the Phillies’ floundering offence.
Along with Lee, Cole Hamels is another starter with the Phillies who has borne the brunt.
At start of the 2012 season, Hamels gave solid performances and yet found himself a loser, for number of games. At some point, disappointments grew high and his confidence was dwindling. Meanwhile, it came out that Hamels was one of those pitchers who have
received least run support in his career.
While Hamels’ fate improved later on, Lee could not shun the jinx. Every game Lee starts, offence goes in to hibernation and fares such an ordinary performance that only defeat is left to be embraced.
In general, the Phillies’ offence despite having issues in the line-up does not perform that poorly. It is only when Lee comes on the mound that out-and-out failure comes about.
Lee has yet to record first win of the 2012 regular season.
The positive thing for the Phillies is a fact that Lee was not disheartened after the game. He was unwavering in his commitment to keep creating chances and bring the Phillies as much closer to the wins as he can as a starter.
Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel comes out to encourage players, who are prone to give place to negative feelings in mind, at the moment. He calls upon the need to show the best, regardless of how things pan out actually.
“That’s just the way it goes sometimes,” Manuel said. “You’ve got to work through that. Sometimes things don’t go your way. Sometimes things don’t happen good for you. Sometimes you’re not doing as good as you usually do. Put all that together and you have
to keep going. You have to try to go out there every time and do the best you can. His talent will win games for us.”
Until the Phillies’ offence wears a new shape and starts providing proper run-support, Lee will be battling with the tough reality. One will hope that the upcoming games spell a change in the fate and he starts fetching a due from his quality throws.
